Four people have been killed as a tricycle collided with a moving train at Iju area of Lagos. The incident occurred on Tuesday at Iju Ishaga area of Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos. General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu confirmed the incident, saying that four people lost their lives. He said the agency received a distress call via the emergency toll-free number 112/767 regarding an accident at the Iju area, Shina Peters Road, Iju Ishaga on Tuesday, saying this prompted the immediate activation of the agency’s Response Team and other stakeholders to the scene of the incident accordingly. “On arrival at the scene of the incident, it was gathered that a tricycle with five people on board had a collision with a moving train at the aforementioned address. “Further information gathered at the scene revealed that the immediate cause of the incident was due to reckless driving on the part of the tricycle driver trying to cross the rail crossing. “
An Anambra State High Court has sentenced an Indian hemp dealer, Chukwuebuka Nneji-Olona, to death by hanging for killing a policeman, Corporal Oluwadaini Temidayo. The policeman was said to have been killed at Oye-Olisa Market, Ogbunike, in the Oyi Local Government Area of the state in 2014. It was learnt that Temidayo used to harass the hemp dealers, which infuriated them. Nneji-Olona was said to have murdered the victim. A source told Punch correspondent that the dealer, who felt guilty for killing the policeman, went to a witch doctor for a charm that would prevent the police from arresting him. The source said, “The defendant, feeling guilty that he killed the victim and for fear of being caught, ran to the house of an herbalist for a ritual that would remove the feeling of guilt that was disturbing him. “The witch doctor, rather than obliging Nneji-Olona’s request, reported the matter to the local vigilante operatives, who arrested and handed him over to the officers
A medical doctor, James Negedu, has been remanded in the Lafia prison for the death of a member of the National Youth Service Corps, Pascaline Madueke, in the Lafia area of Nasarawa State. Madueke, who was a Batch ‘C’ corps member that served in Adogi, Lafia East Development area of the state, was said to have lost her life following a surgical operation at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia. It was learnt that the deceased, who had complained of headache, abdominal pain and malaria, was rushed to a private clinic for treatment, before she was referred to the specialist hospital where she died. During an interview with Punch correspondent, Negedu said the deceased’s uncle, one Ndubuisi, brought her to his clinic on January 18, adding that Madueke complained of headache, abdominal pain, typhoid, malaria and general body pain. Instagram is testing a feature that would hide the like and view counts of photos and videos you post from your followers. The app’s parent company, Facebook, announced the test at its F8 East event in New York City on Tuesday. A photo of the proposed feature obtained by The Fashion Law shows a message that reads: “We want your followers to focus on what you share, not how many likes your posts get. During this test, only you will be able to see the total number of likes on your post.” In the screenshot, a user’s post is shown with “liked by gregmar and others” underneath the photo, with “others” replacing the number of likes. A 34-year-old Nigerian, Nkennaya, has been killed while another Nigerian, Nwudo is in critical condition in a South African hospital following a mob attack. Mr Victor Ayanfe-Oyebanjo, Secretary of Mpumalanga Province branch of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, made the disclosure in a statement made available to News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday. The Ondo State police command has arrested Deji Adenuga, the suspected murderer who set ablaze eight members of his estranged girlfriend’s family in Igbodigo, Okitipupa Local Government Area of the State. The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Femi Joseph, confirmed the arrest on yesterday in Akure to newsmen. Joseph said the suspect was arrested under a bridge around a bus park along Lagos-Benin Expressway in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. According to him, the suspect was said to be one of the inmates who escaped from the Olokuta Prison in Akure during the prison break that occurred in 2013. Joseph said the suspected arsonist would be paraded today (Tuesday) at the command’s headquarters in Akure. Adenuga was reported to have at about 2:00a.m. while the family members were asleep, poured petrol around their apartment and set it on fire. Only his estranged girlfriend, who was not around at the time of the incident survived the arson in a family of nine.
The Head of Public Complaints Rapid Response Unit, Abayomi Shogunle, has said that prostitution is a sin under the two main religions practised by residents of the Federal Capital Territory. He slammed those who condemned the clampdown on prostitutes in Abuja, warning that prostitution is a criminal act in Nigeria. He also drew attention to medical warning that prostitution is responsible for the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, adding that prostitution provides lifeline for violent criminals. He noted that the practitioners don’t pay tax to government, and concluded by saying that the (Nigerian) culture frowns at it. Venezuelan authorities say they are putting down a small coup attempt after opposition leader Juan Guaidó announced he was in the "final phase" of ending President Nicolás Maduro's rule. He appeared in a video with uniformed men, saying he had military support. Mr Guaidó, who declared himself interim president in January, called for more members of the military to help him end Mr Maduro's "usurpation" of power. The military has generally supported Mr Maduro in the stand-off with Mr Guaidó. But as resentment has grown following years of hyperinflation, power cuts, food and medicine shortages, Mr Maduro's detractors hope the military will change its allegiance. So far, they have stood by Mr Maduro - despite dozens of countries, including the US and most of Latin America, recognising Mr Guaidó as Venezuela's rightful leader. The world is now watching to see if Mr Guaidó's latest bid will be the moment Mr Maduro is toppled from power.
The Chairman, board of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Muhammed Mahmood and his daughter have regained freedom. Hussain Danladi, one of Mahmood’s aides, confirmed their release by their abductors on Tuesday. The Federal Government has secured the release of Zainab Aliyu who was arrested in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug trafficking. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday. A 28-year-old man, Abdul-Salam Wasiu, on Wednesday appeared in a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly posting a fake picture of an insane girl inside a gutter on Facebook. The police charged Wasiu, whose address was not given with two counts of breach of peace and belonging to secret a society. The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Oyo State on Tuesday ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to allow the Governor-elect, Seyi Makinde, to inspect the materials used in the March 9 governorship election in the state. INEC declared Mr Makinde, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), winner of the election after polling 515,621 votes. He defeated his closest rival, Adebayo Adelabu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had 357,982 votes. The chairman of the three-man panel, Justice Muhammed Sirajo, granted the application following a prayer by counsel to Mr Makinde, Jamiu Makinde, seeking the order of the tribunal to inspect all the election materials used in the election. A missing model who fell into the sea during a storm off Sao Paulo has been found dead. Caroline Bittencourt's husband Jorge Sestini was rescued on Sunday around two hours after jumping into the water to make a failed attempt to save her. The model's own father Orley participated in the search for the 37-year-old and told a TV programme how he helped pull her body from the sea yesterday afternoon. Caroline, known to Carol as friends, reportedly ended up in the sea after trying to save two pet puppies that had fallen into the water.
